Defiant Cheney vows to block Trump return to White House

Rep. Liz Cheney, a Republican ousted from party leadership on Wednesday, left a closed-door GOP meeting pledging to block former President Donald Trump from ever winning another presidential term.

“I will do everything I can to ensure the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” Cheney told reporters outside of the room where Republicans stripped her from her role as conference chairwoman by a quick voice vote.

TRUMP FOE CHENEY BOOTED FROM GOP LEADERSHIP

Cheney told reporters she does not plan to recede quietly into the House GOP rank and file. Instead, Cheney plans to play a prominent role in leading the wing of the party opposed to Trump and that envisions a future without him playing any significant role in party politics.

Lawmakers removed Cheney after complaints that she is dividing the party and distracting from the goal of winning back the majority in 2022. Cheney said she plans to continue playing a prominent role in keeping the party away from Trump. Cheney said Trump’s actions after the election and his continued insistence that the election was rigged in favor of Biden are damaging the country.

“Going forward, the nation needs a strong Republican Party. The nation needs a party that is based upon fundamental principles of conservatism,” Cheney said. “I am committed and dedicated to ensuring that is how the party moves forward, and I am committed to doing that.”

Cheney said the GOP “is in a place that we’ve got to get it back from,” adding, “we can not be dragged backward from the very dangerous lies of a former president.

Trump has issued statements condemning Cheney and calling on the House Conference to remove her. On Wednesday, just moments before the vote, Trump said in a statement that House Republicans “have a great opportunity today to rid themselves of a poor leader, a major Democrat talking point, a warmonger, and a person with absolutely no personality or heart.”
