Mike Pence hopeful of ‘restoring the sanctity of life to the center of American law’

Vice President Mike Pence, a key leader in the most pro-life administration ever, believes that Washington can play “an even greater role” in ending abortion, including in law, where the 1973 Roe vs. Wade rules.

Pence, a national leader in the pro-life movement sparked by that Supreme Court decision making abortion legal, also feels that “life is winning,” but it hasn’t won yet.

In a remarkable move by a sitting vice president, Pence authored the introduction of a new book on the pro-life movement written by Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a leading anti-abortion group.

With her new book, Life is Winning, Inside the Fight for Unborn Children and Their Mothers, Dannenfelser described how the movement has strengthened since the 1973 decision to the point of helping elect the first president that personally addressed the annual March for Life, also sprung from Roe vs. Wade.

“The battle to restore the right to life has been long and hard-fought — and for many years now, my friend Marjorie Dannenfelser has been at the vanguard, bringing both wise counsel and principled leadership to the cause. As president of the Susan B. Anthony List, she has led an impressive effort over the last three elections to reach more than 4.6 million voters and elect a pro-life president and a pro-life majority in the United States Senate,” Pence wrote.

He noted how the Trump administration has moved to bar tax dollars for overseas abortions, give states powers to defund abortion providers, and appoint pro-life judges.

He also pointed to the growth of the movement in the United States, especially among young people.

And he cited the science of when life begins. “Life is winning through the steady advance of science that illuminates daily the humanity of the unborn child and the truth about when life begins,” wrote Pence.

While many politicians shy from talking freely about God and religion, Pence folds it into his everyday life and comments and did so in his introduction, when he wrote: “It has never been more critical for each of us to continue to stand up and speak out. As Thomas Jefferson once wrote, ‘God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?’”

Just yesterday, Pence made history, being the first vice president to visit a pro-life pregnancy clinic during a trip to Florida that played up the administration’s efforts on the issue. It was part of a kick-off of a “Life Wins!” tour by Dannenfelser’s group.

Several times he wrote in the book that “life is winning,” and he concluded that a victory may be near with more action in Washington, where the issue is on the line in the 2020 election now that Democratic challenger Joe Biden has reversed his past opposition to federal funding of abortion and has gone all in for pro-choice advocacy.

“This moment calls for every ounce of our energy and enthusiasm,” he wrote.

“It requires our full determination and conviction, our passion, and our prayers. It will be the ultimate test of the character and faith at the heart of this movement. But I trust that this important book will encourage and inspire the government to play an even greater role in restoring the sanctity of life to the center of American law and to encourage us never to doubt that the Author of Life is with us in these efforts,” he concluded.
