Cruz and Hirono have spat on abortion during Senate hearing

.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R–Texas, and Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, got into a brief extracurricular disagreement on abortion while the two hosted a hearing on the pros and cons of term limits for federal judges and members of Congress.

During a hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee that primarily featured Cruz and Hirono amid a bevy of empty seats, Cruz concluded the first panel and initiated a transition to the next.

During the switch, Hirono turned on her microphone to note that Cruz had mentioned “many other issues” that she said the American public supports “by a wide margin,” like gun control legislation and abortion rights.

Cruz sighed during her statement and prepared a response against Hirono’s objections that he add anything.

“Well, no, no, Sen. Hirono. If you’re going to make a statement, I’ll at least respond with the facts,” Cruz said. “The overwhelming majority of Americans support the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms and, when it comes to abortion, the current position of the modern Democratic Party, which supports unlimited abortion on demand, partial birth abortion up until the moment of birth, with taxpayer funding and no parental notification and consent. Nine percent of Americans agree with the position of today’s Democratic Party. That is an extreme, and out of step, position.”

Hirono simply said that she disagreed with Cruz’s rebuttal and said there were facts that supported her disagreement, though she did not present them. The hearing then turned its focus to the second panel and continued.
