President Trump is set to make a campaign stop in Montana, announcing plans to hold a rally in Billings next month days after internal Republican polling showed the GOP Senate candidate was in striking distance of defeating incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester.
“Today, we are pleased to announce the scheduling of our next Make America Great Again rally on September 6 in Billings, Montana,” Trump 2020 campaign COO Michael Glassner wrote in a statement.
“The president is looking forward to appearing in the state again to support Matt Rosendale in his race to unseat Sen. Jon Tester,” said Glassner. “Tester falsely portrays himself as a moderate at home, but has opposed the Trump agenda in the Washington swamp with every vote, along with his liberal, out-of-touch Democrat Party leaders.”
Rosendale, Montana’s state auditor turned Republican Senate candidate, has a 2 percentage point advantage on Tester, according to a survey conducted by WPA Intelligence for the National Republican Senatorial Committee that was circulated Monday. Researchers polled 600 likely voters between Aug. 20-22 and the study’s results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Although the poll’s findings excited Republicans hoping to deny Tester a third term in office, Tester is still 5.5 percentage points ahead in RealClearPolitics’ aggregator.
The Sept. 6 event will mark Trump’s third time stumping in Montana and his second appearance in Billings following a rally in June to put his weight behind Rosendale.
