Bank of America announced they will no longer do business with companies who are involved in the operation of migrant detention centers.
The bank talked with the clients on Wednesday and said while they appreciated the “steps they have taken to properly execute their contractual and humanitarian responsibilities,” it ultimately decided to “exit the relationships,” according to CNN.
“Lacking further legal and policy clarity, and in recognition of the concerns of our employees and stakeholders in the communities we serve, it is our intention to exit these relationships,” a representative for Bank of America said.
Caliburn, the company that runs the Homestead center in Florida under a U.S. government contract, was provided a $380 million loan by Bank of America.
Homestead has been a target for Democratic candidates running for president, with many of them making visits outside of the facility and calling it a prison since the minors can not leave.
Homestead Detention Center is an American tragedy. A private corporation is abusing innocent children for profit. We refuse to standby & spend tax payer dollars to treat these kids like prisoners. #EndFamilySeparation pic.twitter.com/t2GDuCMGX0

I went to the Homestead, FL detention center this morning to shine a light on what’s happening. There’s no place in this country for operating private prisons that profit off of cruelty. Detention centers like the one in Homestead should be shut down. pic.twitter.com/ttv7ziHATs

Today I visited the #Homestead Detention Facility. These children need homes, NOT a privatized prison.

Hundreds of employees from furniture giant Wayfair staged a walkout Wednesday, who were protesting that the company sold $200,000 worth of beds to a contractor that furnished a Texas immigration holding facility. In response, Wayfair said they will make a $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross to help migrants.
