McConnell bats down slave-owner heritage reveal with Obama comparison

.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell drew a comparison to President Barack Obama when asked about a news story revealing his ancestors owned slaves.

“I find myself once again in the same position as President Obama,” the Kentucky Republican said, who likes to make an occasional comparison with the former Democratic president. “We both oppose reparations and we both are the descendants of slaveholders.”

An NBC News story revealed this week that McConnell comes from a long-ago slave owning family from Alabama.

McConnell’s great-great-grandfathers owned 14 slaves.

McConnell last month said he is opposed to a plan backed by some Democrats that would pay reparations to the descendants of slaveholders.

Obama in 2007 said ancestors on his mother’s side owned slaves.
