Sen. Chuck Schumer commented on his recent visit to immigration detention centers along the southern border during a stop in Syracuse on Monday, praising the conditions of a center run by Catholic charities as "humane" yet still run by rule of law.

"I saw a place that was humane, but at the same time was going by rule of law. It was run by Catholic charities," said Schumer. "99% of them that Catholic charities are working with show up for their hearings, and then there's rule of law. If they're adjudicated that they're entitled to asylum - they get it. If not, they have to leave. So, it seemed like a much better way to do it."

Schumer says he's going to present the Catholic charities' way of handling border detention facilities to President Trump.

"I was very impressed with the Catholic charities way of doing it," he said. "I am gonna present that to my colleagues, and to the President, as a humane way of dealing with this problem."

Note: A previous version of this story inferred that Sen. Schumer had changed his tone on immigration detention centers. Schumer's Office maintains that mandatory detention Border Patrol facilities are an inhumane disaster, however, they've always believed in the voluntary non-profit Catholic charity shelters.
